Scanning & Fitting

At Arthur Finnieston Prosthetics + Orthotics, we scan our clients with the BioScanner™ laser-line scanner instead of taking a plaster cast which is traditionally done. Therefore, your visit will be quicker and definitely much cleaner.

IMPORTANT – All Prosthetic Clients should bring the style of shoes you wear most often (a new or almost new pair) when you are fit for your limb. Most foot components work properly with shoes of only one heel height, though there are some prosthetic feet that provide adjustment so that shoes of different heel heights can be worn. Athletic type shoes are often recommended, as they are light in weight and usually have soles that prevent slipping. The optimal fitting process would be to bring several pairs of different style shoes that are new or almost new.

First Appointment – Scanning

  • Please bring a pair of loose fitting shorts.
  • Please bring your old prosthesis if you have one.
  • If you have not had a prosthesis before, please make sure that your residual limb is wrapped and you have been following the wrapping program (see Pre-Prosthetic Care)
  • You will be scanned with the BioScanner™ laser-line scanner. We scan instead of taking a plaster cast. Your scan will take a few minutes from start to finish and will collect all the data of your residual limb including: anatomical shape, anatomical landmarks and measurements.

Second Appointment – Fitting*

  • Please bring a pair of loose fitting shorts.
  • Socket will be fit to your residual limb. For trans-tibial and trans-femoral clients, the fitting process is slightly different.
    • Trans-tibial clients – will be fit with the Active Socket™ with Cushion Technology™. With your limb in the socket, we will inject the distal end with our proprietary silicone/foam formulation.
    • Trans-femoral clients – will be fit with the Power Socket™. We fit the socket using a distal end injection, though the final socket does not keep the distal end injection.

  • Socket will be modified to achieve optimal comfort, the height will be adjusted and the foot dynamically aligned to the socket.
  • You will learn to don and doff your prosthesis, the process of putting your prosthesis on and removing it.
  • Prosthesis may be retained for cosmetic finishing (see Cosmetic Cover). If not patient will leave with prosthesis and return in one week

Third Appointment – Fitting*

  • Client is rechecked for comfort in socket, dynamic alignment and gait.

*The Fitting Process is unique to every patient and therefore the above is simply a guideline to our clinical procedures. More involved cases may require more visits and modifications to achieve the proper fit for the patient.
